Daiquiri is a category of cocktails, whose main ingredients are rum, citrus juice, and sugar. Many bars and restaurants put their own spin on this classic cocktail, adding different flavors and mixers. Some bars even serve this drink frozen. We can trace the creation of the daiquiri back to 1898 to a village in Cuba named Daiquiri.
An American engineer named Jennings Cox was supervising a mining operation at this location during the Spanish-American War. Every day after work he and his employees would gather at the Venus bar. One day, Cox decided to mix Bacardi, lime, and sugar into a tall glass of ice. He named the new beverage after the Daiquiri mines, and the drink became a staple in Havana, Cuba. As time went on, the ice in daiquiris became shaved and lemons or both lemons and limes were used to create the drink. In 1909, American Admiral Lucius W. Johnson, a Navy medical officer, tried Cox’s drink. He enjoyed it so much that he shared it with the Army and Navy Club in Washington, D.C. Then, the popularity of the daiquiri steadily increased over the next couple of decades. Today, you can find tasty daiquiris at many restaurants and bars, including Coastal Kitchen.
