Happy hour is a lot different now than it was when it first began. Happy hour dates back to the early days of the Mexican-American war. During the 1910s, American sailors aboard the U.S.S. Arkansas would drink, dance, and participate in boxing matches during “happy hour.” Even though liquor was banned on naval vessels in 1899, sailors snuck alcohol onboard as a way to entertain themselves after fighting.

Speaking of sneaking alcohol, happy hour also has roots in the prohibition. When alcohol was illegal, individuals would sneak off to speakeasies in order to get their fix. It was too suspicious for people to leave during the morning or night, so they would visit speakeasies after work, but before dinner, which is why happy hour is usually between the hours of 4 and 6 p.m.
